After Delivery

After parents have spent months planning for the delivery of their baby and have experienced the wonder of bringing a new child into the world, they are often caught unprepared for what happens in the hospital during the first few days of recovery. To minimize the confusion and to answer some common questions, we’ve provided the following information to familiarize you with your postpartum hospital stay. And, if you have questions, your nurse will be available to help you.

Security

As soon as your baby is born, he or she will be given a security wrist band to wear for the duration of the hospital stay. A matching band will be placed on the wrists of the mother and father (or other partner). The bands will not be removed until the mother and baby leave the hospital. Other extensive security measures are provided for you during your hospital stay and you will be provided with special information and instructions upon your admission to the hospital. Any questions regarding security for you or your baby should be addressed to your nurse.

Baby Portraits

If you would like to have your child’s photograph taken at the hospital, we have made an arrangement with a baby portrait company, Hospital Baby Portraits, Inc., to provide you with pictures. [read more]

Day After Delivery

Consults: After delivery, various counselors and resources are available to assist you with any special needs you might have. Your nurse will observe the baby’s feeding and help you with breast or bottle feeding, as needed. You may have blood drawn the morning after delivery if necessary. If you had a Caesarean delivery, your abdominal bandage will be checked, then removed 12-24 hours after delivery.

Tests and Assessments: Your vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse and breathing), uterus, vaginal bleeding and episiotomy will be observed hourly for the first several hours. The newborn screening blood test, which checks for four diseases and is required by law, will be done before your baby is sent home.

Medications: For your comfort, pain medications are available and may be requested. Please request it from your nurse. If you have an IV in your hand or arm, your nurse may remove it, or check it and treat you if it is uncomfortable. A stool softener may be offered, and an ice pack may be supplied to prevent swelling and provide comfort. Also, if you are not immune to Rubella (German Measles), you may receive information about a vaccine if your doctor orders it for you.

Nutrition/Diet: After a vaginal delivery, you will be able to eat whatever you like. Drink enough juice and water to satisfy your thirst. After a Caesarean delivery, your diet will start with ice chips or liquids. Solid food will be given as tolerated.
