Natural Birth

Natural childbirth is an unmedicated birth — labor and childbirth without using pain medications or surgery. In place of medications, natural childbirth methods teach exercises, breathing and relaxation techniques to help women manage the pain. Women who choose this method of birth do so because they believe birth is not a medical procedure, but a natural process, which their bodies are designed to accomplish on their own. Advocates of natural childbirth feel this method offers a woman more control over the events surrounding her labor and delivery, and allows women to become active participants in the birth.

Natural childbirth can take place at a birth center, at home, or in a hospital. Physicians or midwives may be used, as well as a doula. Other than the decision to forgo medication, there are no special rules for natural childbirth.

Methods of natural childbirth

There are many different methods, although the Lamaze method and Bradley method are most popular. These two methods are very similar. They emphasize coping skills during labor and delivery to reduce tension and anxiety. Techniques include massage, visualization, natural breathing and meditation. There may also be an emphasis on the role of the birth coach (a friend or partner) to provide support during labor.
